This lecture is a unique study of the origins of the recitation of eulogies (Nashids/Poems of Praise) from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Shaykh ul Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir ul Qadri utilises rigorously authenticated narrations from the six canonical books, as well as the other infamous compilations of Prophetic traditions, to establish that the recitation of eulogies was a common and praiseworthy practise amongst the Companions and pious predecessors. He mentions that according to his research approximately 45 Companions of the Prophet (SAW) were eulogists (Munshidun). The Shaykh then expounds on the legality of Raqs (a specific form of dancing), delivering an unprecedented commentary on the Hadith of the Ethiopians playing in the Mosque of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Drawing on narrations from the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and the commentaries of Sahih al Bukhari and Muslim, Shaykh ul Islam establishes that the play of the Ethiopians was in fact a dance, celebrating the arrival of the Messenger (peace be upon him) in Madina. The Shaykh concludes that the love of the Beloved (peace be upon him) is the spirit of faith and that the recitation of eulogies in his praise is an expression of that love.
